300 blackout supersonic vs subsonic12/25/2023 This supplement is part of ongoing PEW Science small arm weapon system sound signature research. Both FRP and total sound signature suppression regimes are examined. It is cross-compatible with 223 Rem/5.56×45 magazines. Like some other rifle silencers, it is a direct-thread model possessing a 25-degree taper for use on tapered-barrel muzzles. This research supplement is intended to provide more information to PEW Science members with regard to specific sound signature characteristics of the tested configurations in the aforementioned reviews and to help frame objective loudness comparisons between five 30 caliber rifle silencers that use various technologies to suppress subsonic 300 BLK sound signatures. The 300 AAC Blackout delivers ballistic performance comparable to 7.62×39, yet possesses a base diameter that optimizes functionality in an AR-type platform. 30 rifle silencer with high flow rate (low back pressure), at the expense of suppression performance, with 300 BLK subsonic ammunition. Quantifying these performance differentials is essential for characterizing hazards to the system operator and bystanders. However, certain designs may significantly outperform others in this regard. In general, increasing gross flow rate through a silencer can significantly reduce signature suppression performance, particularly with subsonic ammunition. The ballistic performance paints the round as esoteric and eludes to the secretive nature of special operations. Many silencers exhibit significantly different performance when using supersonic and subsonic ammunition. The 300 Blackout cartridge is best fired from a suppressed, short-barreled AR-style firearm at distances shorter than 400 meters if supersonic ammunition is used, and less than 200 if subsonic. Their subsonic 300 BLK suppression performance provides an excellent case study comparing current rifle silencer technology. The five silencers behave differently, even despite some of them exhibiting similar performance quantified by the PEW Science Suppression Rating. The silencers in this group were selected for their relevance to the three rifle silencer technology classes: Conventional, High Flow Rate, and Hybrid Design. Both provide similar AR configurations to accomplish this. Both can be effectively suppressed when loaded as subs. Both cartridges can function as supersonic and subsonic loads with short barrels. Five silencers evaluated by PEW Science are included in this members-only Research Supplement to examine relative First Round Pop (FRP) and overall sound signature suppression performance characteristics. The AR-15 is equally capable of chambering 300 Blackout and 9mm Parabellum.
